Look Back: A New Anime Classic Arrives in North America
The highly anticipated anime adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s acclaimed manga, Look Back, is set to make its North American debut on October 4th, thanks to distributor GKids. This release is greatly awaited by fans, particularly those who admire Fujimoto, the creator of Chainsaw Man. With its deep and poignant storytelling paired with stunning artistic direction, Look Back is not just a contender for the anime movie of the year; it may well stand as one of the greatest anime films of the decade.
North American Release Details

Chainsaw Man Brings Denji's History of Trauma Full Circle With Latest Incredible Twist
GKids has announced via their social media platform, X, that Look Back will premiere in North American theaters on October 4th. The release will feature the original Japanese audio with English subtitles. As of now, there is no information regarding a potential English dub. However, if a dub is produced, it may be released when the movie becomes available on streaming services or home media platforms.
The Story of Look Back
Adapted from Fujimoto’s celebrated manga, Look Back follows the journey of a young artist, Ayumu Fujino. Initially confident in her own manga creations, Fujino’s self-image is challenged when her classmate Kyomoto begins publishing manga that she perceives as artistically superior. This deeply personal and emotional narrative explores themes of self-doubt and artistic growth.
Critical Acclaim and Anticipation

The manga Look Back, created between parts one and two of Chainsaw Man, was met with critical acclaim. Its anime adaptation by Studio Durian has garnered even more praise, with reviewers declaring it a new classic. Directed by Kiyotaka Oshiyama, a veteran animator known for his work on Gurren Lagann, Space Dandy, and The Boy and The Heron, the film is Studio Durian’s first significant project beyond animation for a cosmetic advertisement featuring Neon Genesis Evangelion characters. Oshiyama not only directed but also handled character design and scriptwriting for the film.
A Different Side of Fujimoto
While Tatsuki Fujimoto is best known for his dynamic works like Chainsaw Man and Fire Punch, Look Back offers a different perspective on his storytelling prowess. This one-shot manga is more grounded, allowing Fujimoto to enhance his already exceptional characterization and atmospheric storytelling to new heights. Despite its grounded nature, it retains the surreal elements that are a hallmark of Fujimoto’s style.
GKids’ Winning Streak
GKids is on a remarkable trajectory, having recently distributed The Boy and the Heron, which won Miyazaki his second Oscar. The distributor is committed to bringing the finest anime films to North American audiences. While Look Back may not be as strong an Oscar contender as The Boy and the Heron, it is by no means due to a lack of quality. The film could very well be one of the best anime movies of the past decade.
Fans eagerly await the North American release of Look Back, which promises to be a memorable cinematic experience when it hits theaters on October 4th.
